"Motivational Interviewing for
Your Compulsive Hoarding Clients"
Presented by
Dr. David Tolin

Many individuals with compulsive hoarding exhibit limited
insight into the severity of the problem. Even among those who
recognize the problem, many are highly ambivalent about changing
their behavior. Direct confrontation of ambivalence has been
generally found to be unhelpful, frequently resulting in arguments
and entrenched positions. Motivational Interviewing (MI), a style
of communicating derived from substance abuse research, helps
clients explore ambivalence in a non-threatening manner and appears
more likely to lead to acceptance of intervention and subsequent
follow-through.
In this workshop,
we will discuss the principles and assumptions of MI, examine
specific MI techniques, and practice aspects of MI in active
role-play exercises.
